The Roots - Undun

Undun, the Roots' 12th studio album, is named after a Guess Who song that came out in the late sixties. The album features contributions from BIG KRIT, Dice Raw, Phonte, Greg Porn, Truck North and also includes a short instrumental piece by the multi-talented Sufjan Stevens. This last track is indeed the first of four instrumental pieces that bring the 40-minute LP to its conclusion.

I was drawn to this album by the third track, Make My. I enjoy the way this track ebbs and flows, the melody is transfixing and the way it ends, with its uplifting vibe just bring it home for me. Another really strong track is Kool On, which uses some excellent easy on the ear samples to carry it through. The OtherSide is also very catchy yet substantial too, with some huge hooks thrown in.

The downsides for me on this are the instrumentals. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me on this, but I just don't really see the point on an album like this. They almost fill like fillers and were it not for the caliber of the LP's strong tracks, I would have felt very disapointed with the way this all ends. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem whatsoever with instrumentals of this type, or indeed with experimentation. I just didn't get it within this particular context. But then maybe I need to return to this in a few months and see if I can grasp the bigger picture...

Such is the holding power of Undun's strong tracks that I'm very sure I'll be listening to this album a lot in times to come.
