Sky Ferreira crashes the glammed out pop scene like a Courtney Love for the Buzzfeed set with her long-awaited debut Night Time, My Time. Ferreira's music industry struggles and career reinventions have been well told by now, though they make it easy to forget that she is only 21 years old; it is this youthful energy working in tandem with the cynicism and world-weariness of someone whose teenage years were spent in record label boardrooms that gives Ferreira a startlingly original and developed voice.

Songs like "You're Not The One" and "I Will" brim with anger and lust, while "Boys" and "Ain't Your Right" ("I'll only warn you one time / I've got a stilted view") are playful and propulsive slices of fuzzed out pop. Though Ferreira draws heavily from a mix of 80s and 90s alternative and pop touchstones (echoes of Madonna, The Go-Gos, Bauhaus, and even Suicide) the album is far more than a transparent collage of influences; the title track is a haunting dirge that quickly burrows its way into your head, while the standout "IBlame Myself" channels the years of Ferreira's career frustrations into a single cathartic release that is somehow defiant, vulnerable, self-critical and freeing all at the same time: "I blame, I blame, blame myself for my reputation."

Even though the average listener may not be able to relate to her unique upbringing and teenage experience, this is that rare brand of pop music that is universal without sacrificing any personal style, history, or vision. Let's just hope we don't have to suffer through four more years for a follow-up.
