Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven

25 September, 2013

After numerous and obscure tapes, Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never, had burst onto the map of electronic/experimental music in 2010 with his album "Returnal". "Returnal" was an experimental/drone album on Editions Mego, a label founded by Peter Rehberg (who has already collaborated with the likes of Sunn O))) and Fennesz). But it's when "Replica" hit the shelves that Daniel Lopatin showed all the depth of his creativity, intertwining his melancholy perfectly with his intellectual approach thanks to melodic loops & old advert samples. Needless to say that when I heard that he had signed with Warp, my excitement increased to new and unfound heights. After Jackson & His Computer Band & Boards of Canada's new albums, Warp shows signs of rejuvenation and proves that 24 years after its debut, the Sheffield-born and London-based label is back at the forefront of unique electronic music.

Oneohtrix Point Never, whose "R Plus Seven" is being released on Sept 30th is  definitely the best album I've heard this year so far. From the opener, "Boring Angel", we instantly feel we're up for much more emotion than with his previous works. First a religious feel, then epic twirling synth sounds that seem to come from the future. The feeling of space (in all senses of the word) is much greater than on "Returnal" & "Replica". We even feel a new age/gothic inspiration on "Americans", as if Dead Can Dance had merged with Lopatin, but in 2075.

The ease with which Oneohtrix Point Never balances his intellectual approach with his emotions as well as constant change in rhythm & melody shows how important this album already is for us humans in 2013. I don't really think we will be able to understand its impact after a few years, let alone in some months, in this world where artists, journalists and listeners are used to numerous new tracks, albums and remixes every single day.

Don't take time to get ready for "R Plus Seven"; delve, plunge inside its waters. Immediately.
