Kvelertak - Kvelertak

*Gasp* I really need to catch my breath on this one. Kvelertak might just be one of those once-in-a-blue-moon occurrences that one hopes and waits for in this particular music arena.

I've been an avid fan of metal and the vast majority of its offshoots for the past 20 years or so. It's therefore not often these days that I will be pleasantly surprised by something new within this genre. Kvelertak, which in Norwegian I'm told means Stranglehold, have come up with something really exciting and fresh on this, their debut LP.

The Norwegian sextet manage to conjure this freshness by combining punk and black metal to pure power-chord infused good old sing-along anthemic metal. The results are in many instances fantastic. The excellent Blodtorst grabs you by the scruff of the neck right from the get-go only to then maneuver you nicely into a really catchy hook (you'll know which one I mean when you hear it). Fossegrim is one of those tunes that simply makes you mechanically bob your head without even knowing it.

The influences are many and varied. On Sultans Of Satan for example, Kvelertak have even taken an affinity for Jimi Hendrix to the next level with their Foxy Lady impromptu skit. Add some cow bells a few seconds later, and you get that feel-good, fists in the air like you just don't care feeling.

Not everything on this LP is amazing. The first two tracks in my opinion could have been developed a little further and I might even have positioned them later on the album. I'll be extremely interested to both see these guys live and also to hear what they can come up with next. If it's anything near the sheer quality of tracks like Ordsmedar av Rang, expect to hear a lot more about these guys.
